The view

You will spend most of your stay looking out

The house sits high enough on Cuthbert Close to see straight over the rooftops. In one sweep you get the Keurbooms lagoon, the dunes, the break at Lookout, open ocean, and the Outeniqua Mountains running away to the north. It is a full sea view rather than a glimpse between other roofs, and it is the thing guests write about first.

Almost every guest who writes a review mentions it. Nicole called the views incredible. Trish called them spectacular. There is a reason the dining table faces the glass.

  • A sea view over the lagoon, the ocean and the mountains from every living area
  • A wide sliding glass wall onto the terrace
  • Two of the three bedrooms open to the outside

The terrace

Room to actually spread out

The terrace runs the width of the house behind a frameless glass balustrade, so nothing interrupts the view when you are sitting down. It catches sun for most of the day and the braai is out here.

Inside, the living space is open plan and bright. Kitchen, dining and lounge all share the same light and the same outlook, which makes the house work well for a family or two couples travelling together.

  • Large private terrace with outdoor dining
  • Braai and outdoor furniture
  • Open plan lounge, kitchen and dining

Sleeping

Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, six people

The main bedroom has a king bed and its own bathroom. The second and third bedrooms each have twin beds and both open onto the outside, one of them with its own bathroom as well. Beds are made up with proper linen and there are towels for everyone.

Guests consistently score the house 9.6 for cleanliness, which is the part we care about most. Kiki wrote that even the cutlery was packed in a neat pattern.

  • Two twin bedrooms, one with en suite bathroom
  • Bath and separate shower in the family bathroom

The lights stay on

Where you will be

Two beaches and a lagoon within walking distance

8 Cuthbert Close, Plettenberg Bay, in the middle of the Garden Route. Self catering accommodation on a quiet cul de sac, five minutes from the shops.

Cuthbert Close is a short, quiet road on the lagoon side of Plett. Lookout Beach, the long one with the lagoon mouth at the end of it, is a six minute walk. Poortjies, which is calmer and better for small children, is about the same. Between them you have a swimming beach, a walking beach and a tidal lagoon, all on foot.

Most self catering accommodation in Plett sits a drive from the water. This does not.

The shops are close enough that most guests do not move the car once they arrive. There is a supermarket and a row of restaurants and cafes just over a kilometre away, and Robberg Nature Reserve with its well known peninsula hike is a fifteen minute drive.

Plettenberg Bay sits in the middle of the Garden Route, on the N2 between Knysna and the Tsitsikamma, so a day trip in either direction is easy. From about June to November southern right whales and humpbacks move through the bay, and dolphins run the back line for most of the year.

Questions

Questions guests ask before they book

If yours is not here, message Mary and she will answer it herself.

How far is the beach from the house?

Lookout Beach is 600 m away, about a six minute walk down the road. Poortjies, which is calmer and better for small children, is 650 m. Central Beach and the town beaches are 3 km, and Robberg Nature Reserve is an 8 km drive.

How many people does Pansy Seashell sleep?

Six. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms across 250 m². The main bedroom has a king bed and its own bathroom, and the second and third bedrooms each have twin beds, one of them with an en suite as well. Cots and extra beds are not available, so six is the maximum.

Is there a swimming pool?

No, the house does not have a pool. What it has instead is two swimming beaches and the mouth of the Keurbooms lagoon within a ten minute walk, which is why most guests do not move the car once they arrive.

What happens during load shedding?

Very little. The house runs an inverter with battery backup, and the water is heated by solar panels on the roof. When the area goes dark you keep your lights, your plug points, your wifi and your hot water.

Is there air conditioning?

No. The house is tiled throughout and the sliding doors catch the sea breeze off the lagoon, which is how most self catering houses in Plettenberg Bay are built. There is a fireplace in the lounge for cold winter evenings.

Can we braai at the house?

Yes. There is a braai on the terrace with outdoor dining and furniture beside it, so you can cook with the lagoon in front of you. Inside there is a gas stovetop and oven, a dishwasher and a full set of kitchenware, and the dining table seats six.

Is there a minimum stay?

A minimum stay applies over busy periods such as December and Easter. Outside those, ask. Booking direct means Mary can be flexible about length of stay and arrival times in a way the booking platforms cannot.

Are pets allowed?

No pets, and no smoking anywhere on the property. Children of all ages are welcome, and guests under 18 arrive with a parent or guardian. The house is not available for parties or events.

How do we get to Plettenberg Bay?

Plettenberg Bay sits on the Garden Route, on the N2 between Knysna and the Tsitsikamma. George Airport is about 110 km away, roughly an hour and a quarter by road, and Plettenberg Bay has its own small airport 8 km from the house. There is free secure parking on site when you arrive.

Can we book direct instead of through a travel site?

Yes, and it is the easiest way. Send Mary a WhatsApp message and you are talking to the person who actually looks after the house. The property is also listed on Booking.com, which is where its 41 guest reviews and its 9.2 rating live, and on LekkeSlaap.
